What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use print dictionaries, digital dictionaries, and spell-check tools to verify uncertain spellings. They choose the correction that fits the word’s meaning and sentence context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students notice doubtful spellings and find the correct forms in print or digital references. They check definitions and context instead of accepting suggestions automatically.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume spell-check catches every error, including correctly spelled homophones used incorrectly. They may select the first suggested word without checking its meaning. Some struggle to find a dictionary entry when their first spelling is far off.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph with five spelling errors. Have them use a print or digital reference to correct each word and record the entry they checked.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a print dictionary and six misspelled word cards; students locate each entry, record the correct spelling, and cite the guide words.
Ask students to explain in writing why spell-check may miss “their going home” and how checking definitions can help.
Run a reference relay where teams correct one word at a time, justify the correction, and then pass the marker.
Have students proofread a mock email to the principal, verify every flagged word, and produce a clean final copy.
