What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify words whose spelling may be wrong or uncertain. They use a print dictionary, digital dictionary, or spell-check tool to verify and correct each word.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students independently notice doubtful spellings and verify them with a print or digital reference. They choose the spelling that fits the sentence and make accurate corrections.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often accept the first spell-check suggestion, even when it changes the meaning. They may miss correctly spelled homophones, such as principal and principle, or struggle when a misspelling begins with the wrong letters.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Use a print or digital dictionary to correct this sentence: “The commitee recieved seperate recomendations from its advisers.” Rewrite it and name the source used.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs print dictionaries and misspelled word cards; students find each correct spelling, copy the entry, and mark the letters they changed.
Write a paragraph with five teacher-selected challenge words, then annotate which reference source confirmed each spelling.
Run a dictionary relay: teams correct one misspelled word at a time and record the guide words or search term used.
Students proofread a mock club announcement, use a dictionary to verify doubtful words, and submit a clean final copy.
