What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use print dictionaries, digital dictionaries, classroom word lists, and spell-check tools to verify uncertain spellings. They correct errors and confirm that each chosen word fits the sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students notice likely spelling errors and choose a useful print or digital reference. They find the intended word, check its meaning, and copy the correct spelling accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may trust the first spell-check suggestion without checking meaning. They may overlook correctly spelled homophones, such as “their” and “there,” or struggle to find a badly misspelled word in a dictionary.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Use a dictionary or approved digital tool to correct “Their freind recieved the package.” Rewrite the sentence and name the resource used.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs print dictionaries and misspelled word cards, then have them find, correct, and record each word’s guide words.
Ask students to explain when a dictionary is more useful than spell-check and give an example where spell-check might miss an error.
Play Spelling Tool Challenge, where teams use dictionaries, word walls, or digital tools to correct one word per round.
Have students proofread a class announcement for spelling errors, verify each correction with a reference, and prepare a clean final copy.
