What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students check uncertain spellings with a print dictionary, digital dictionary, glossary, or spell-check tool. They confirm that the corrected word fits the sentence’s meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students notice words they are unsure about and use print or digital tools to verify them. They choose the spelling that matches the word’s meaning and correct the text accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may accept the first spell-check suggestion without checking its meaning. They may also confuse correctly spelled homophones, such as their and there, or stop searching when a misspelled word is not listed.
How to Assess It
- Give students a six-sentence exit ticket with five misspelled words and access to a dictionary. Ask them to correct each word and circle one dictionary entry that confirms meaning.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed dictionary and word cards with misspellings, then have them find, correct, and alphabetize each word.
Ask students to explain in writing why spell-check might suggest the wrong word for a sentence.
Play a dictionary relay where teams locate ten challenging words and record each correct spelling and page number.
Have students proofread a mock restaurant menu, using reference tools to correct misspelled food names and descriptions.
