What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use print or digital references to investigate an unfamiliar or multiple-meaning word. They compare the listed meanings with the sentence and choose the best fit.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students quickly find an entry in a print or digital reference. They select the numbered meaning that fits the sentence and point to context that supports their choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first definition listed without checking the sentence. They may also ignore parts of speech, usage labels, or differences between similar definitions.

How to Assess It

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place dictionaries at stations. Students use guide words and entry labels to match five sentence cards with the correct numbered definitions.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why one dictionary meaning of “draft” fits a sentence and why another does not.

  3. Play a reference race where pairs locate assigned words, record the matching definition, and underline the sentence clue that proves it.

  4. Have students use a medicine label or weather report to look up one unfamiliar word and select the meaning that fits.
