What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice when a word does not make sense and ask a clear question to get help. They link the new word to a known word, object, action, or experience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- During a read-aloud, the student points out an unfamiliar word and asks what it means. After hearing an explanation, the student connects it to a known word, object, action, or experience.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students skip unfamiliar words or wait for an adult to notice their confusion. Others ask how to say a word instead of what it means, or connect words only because they sound alike.
How to Assess It
- Display, “The kitten was famished, so it ate quickly.” Have students ask about famished, then name a familiar word with a similar meaning.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs textured objects and cards labeled smooth, rough, and prickly; students handle each object, ask about unfamiliar labels, and match related words.
Read, “The turtle strolled across the path.” Ask, “What could strolled mean, and which word you know is closest?”
Play Word Connection Match: students draw an unfamiliar-word card and pair it with a familiar synonym or picture, then ask for help if stuck.
Show a weather forecast screenshot; students ask about forecast, then connect it to a familiar phrase such as what the weather will be.
