What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether two familiar words have nearly the same meaning or opposite meanings. They use that relationship to choose a word that makes sense in a sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a word such as happy, a student can give glad as a synonym and sad as an antonym. The student can select the word that fits a simple sentence and explain the relationship.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any related words synonyms, such as dog and cat. They may treat synonyms as exact replacements even when a sentence sounds wrong. They may also mix up the labels synonym and antonym.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: For big, circle its synonym from large, tiny, red. Then circle its antonym from round, small, loud.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs of word cards, such as hot, warm, and cold, and have students sort them into same-meaning and opposite-meaning groups.
Ask, "Would you rather feel glad or sad on your birthday, and which word means almost the same as happy?"
Play concentration with picture and word cards, and let students keep a match after naming whether the words have similar or opposite meanings.
During a classroom walk, students find objects that are large and small, then suggest another word for each description.
