What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare words to determine how their meanings connect. They use similarities, opposites, and analogy patterns to clarify unfamiliar words and shades of meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify whether words are similar, opposite, or connected by another clear pattern. They use that relationship to infer meaning and explain their reasoning with context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat synonyms as exact matches and ignore differences in tone or intensity. They may also reverse an analogy or confuse antonyms with unrelated words.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Reluctant is to eager as scarce is to ____: rare, plentiful, hidden, costly.” Students choose an answer and explain the relationship.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs of word cards for students to sort into synonyms, antonyms, and analogy relationships, then defend one placement.
Ask students to explain how slim, thin, and scrawny differ in tone, then write one sentence using each word accurately.
Play an analogy relay where teams complete word pairs and name the relationship before earning a point.
Collect words from advertisements and have students compare each word with a synonym that would change the product’s appeal.
