What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how words are connected through similar meanings, opposite meanings, or parallel relationships. They use those connections to infer meaning and explain differences in word choice.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly label word pairs as synonyms, antonyms, or parts of an analogy. They use the relationship to explain an unfamiliar word and can describe differences between closely related words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat synonyms as exact matches and miss differences in tone or strength. They may reverse analogy relationships or assume every word pair is either a synonym or an antonym.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Scarce is the opposite of plentiful. What does scarce mean, and how does the word relationship help you know?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs of word cards for students to sort into synonyms, antonyms, and analogies, then require a written reason for each choice.
Ask students to compare annoyed, angry, and furious, then write which word best fits three short situations and explain why.
Play analogy relay with sentence strips, where teams select the missing word and state the relationship before earning a point.
Have students examine product reviews and advertisements for near-synonyms, then explain how each word shapes the reader’s impression.
