What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine unfamiliar meanings by using context, Greek and Latin word parts, and word relationships. They analyze figurative language, symbols, analogies, and connotations. They use reference tools to check word information, then apply new words in speaking and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students infer a word’s meaning and point to context or word parts that support the inference. They explain how connotation and figurative language shape meaning. They verify word information with a reference source and use new vocabulary accurately in speech and writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a familiar meaning that does not fit the sentence. They may treat synonyms as exact matches, confuse connotation with definition, or interpret figurative language literally. They may also divide words into incorrect roots or affixes.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage with one unfamiliar word and one metaphor. Ask them to infer the word’s meaning, cite two clues, explain the metaphor, and use the word in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs root, prefix, suffix, and definition cards to build words, predict meanings, then verify each word in a dictionary.
Ask students to compare “slim” and “skinny” in two character descriptions, then explain how each word changes the reader’s judgment.
Run a context-clue relay where teams infer highlighted words, label the clue used, and earn a point only with text evidence.
Collect headlines, ads, or product labels, then have students identify connotations, figurative language, and specialized terms that shape the message.
