What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students infer the meaning of an unfamiliar word or phrase from nearby details and the passage's main idea. They also use grammar, such as whether the word names, describes, or shows action.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student proposes a meaning that fits the full passage, identifies the details that support it, and names the target word's grammatical role. The student can replace the word with a sensible synonym without changing the sentence's meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students often grab the nearest clue even when it does not explain the target word. They may ignore tone, contrast words, or grammar and choose a familiar meaning that makes the sentence sound wrong.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “The mayor's terse reply contained only two words, while the reporter's question filled a page. What does terse mean? Underline two clues and label its part of speech.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence-strip cards; they underline clues, label each target word's part of speech, and replace it with a fitting synonym.

  2. Post a short paragraph and ask, “Which clue best reveals the bold word’s meaning, and why is another clue weaker?”

  3. Run Context Clue Bingo: read sentences aloud, and students cover meaning cards only after explaining the clue and grammatical role.

  4. Have students infer one unfamiliar word from a menu, news caption, or instruction label, then check a dictionary and report the useful clue.
