What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work out an unfamiliar word or phrase by using nearby details and the way the sentence is built. They check that the inferred meaning fits the word’s role, tone, and the larger passage.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give a meaning that fits the passage and point to specific words or structural clues that support it. They revise an initial guess when the grammar or wider context does not fit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab the first familiar meaning without checking whether it fits the sentence. They may rely on nearby words but ignore contrast signals, punctuation, or a word’s grammatical role. They may also confuse a reasonable guess with a meaning supported by evidence.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Unlike his talkative brother, Malik was laconic during the interview.” Define “laconic,” then underline the clue and explain how the sentence supports your answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with one unfamiliar word, then have them mark punctuation, signal words, and grammar clues before writing a definition.
Ask students to explain which clue matters more in a sample sentence, the surrounding details or the word’s grammatical role, and why.
Play Context Clue Relay, teams infer a bold word, cite one clue, and earn a point only when both meaning and evidence fit.
Use a short job posting, news paragraph, or product review and have students infer three unfamiliar terms from the wording and sentence structure.
