What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students infer the meaning of unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words from surrounding details and sentence structure. They use contrasts, examples, modifiers, punctuation, and grammatical roles to test their interpretation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students propose a meaning that fits both the surrounding ideas and the word's role in the sentence. They cite specific clues and explain how those clues support or rule out a meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a familiar definition even when it does not fit the sentence. They may rely only on word parts or nearby words. Some ignore contrasts, punctuation, modifiers, and the word's grammatical role.

How to Assess It

Give students this sentence: "Although Mara's earlier answers were direct, her final response was equivocal, leaving the committee unsure of her position." Ask them to define "equivocal" and identify two clues supporting their answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sentence strips to arrange around an unknown word, then have them explain how each added clause changes the likely meaning.

  2. Ask students to explain how the meaning of "reserved" changes in two teacher-provided sentences and cite the clue that causes each change.

  3. Play Context Clue Relay, where teams match unfamiliar words to definitions and underline the sentence feature that proves each match.

  4. Have students annotate an unfamiliar term in a school policy or news article, then verify its meaning with a dictionary.
