What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students figure out an unfamiliar word or phrase by using details across the sentence or paragraph. They also use the word’s grammatical role to test whether their meaning fits.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students give a reasonable meaning that fits the passage and the word’s grammatical role. They point to specific clues and revise their answer if it does not fit.

Common Misconceptions

Students may grab the nearest familiar word instead of using the whole sentence or paragraph. They may also ignore whether the unknown word acts as a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “The trail was treacherous, with loose rocks and steep drops.” Define “treacherous” and cite two details that support your answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with a boxed word; students highlight clues, label its sentence role, and write a likely meaning.

  2. Write: In “The abandoned playground was desolate, with no voices or movement,” what does desolate mean, and which words prove it?

  3. Play Context Clue Relay: teams infer one underlined word from a card, cite two clues, then pass the marker.

  4. Read a restaurant review, circle three unfamiliar words, infer each meaning from nearby details, then compare with a dictionary.
