What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify Greek and Latin prefixes, roots, and suffixes inside unfamiliar words. They combine the meanings of those parts, then use context to refine the definition.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can break an unfamiliar word into a prefix, root, and suffix when present. They use those parts and the sentence context to give a reasonable definition.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat any familiar letter group as a meaningful word part. They may define each part correctly but combine the meanings too literally or ignore how suffixes change usage.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Workers entered a subterranean tunnel beneath the city.” Students divide “subterranean” into parts, explain each part, and infer the word’s meaning.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word-part cards such as pre, dict, ion, and ask them to build words, define each part, and explain the whole word.
Ask students to compare biography and geology, then write how each root and suffix contributes to the word’s meaning.
Run a root matching relay where teams pair roots such as aud, spect, and port with meanings and sample words.
Have students find three Greek or Latin word parts on product labels, signs, or news headlines and infer each word’s meaning.
