What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine the meanings of unfamiliar words from grade-level reading, classroom talk, and topic study. They use those words accurately when speaking and writing about texts and ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain a word's meaning in context and point to text clues that support their thinking. They use new words accurately in discussion and writing, including correct word forms.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a familiar meaning that does not fit the sentence. They may treat a subject term as having the same meaning in every class. They may know a definition but use the wrong word form or tone.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose one new word from today's text. Write its meaning in context, underline the clue, and use the word accurately in a new sentence about the topic.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word, definition, example, and nonexample cards to match, then have them defend one match using evidence from the text.
Ask students to write how the word "reluctant" sharpens a character's response compared with the word "unwilling."
Play Vocabulary Taboo, where students describe a target word from the week's reading without using the word, its root, or listed synonyms.
Have students annotate a news article, select three topic-specific words, and rewrite one paragraph for a younger audience.
