What Students Need to Do
- Students learn the meanings of words used across school subjects and words tied to specific topics. They use context, listening, reading, and discussion to understand and apply them accurately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain academic and subject-specific words using context and knowledge of word parts. They use those words accurately when discussing or writing about a text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a familiar everyday meaning with the meaning used in science, history, or literature. They may also recognize a word while reading but use it incorrectly when speaking or writing.
How to Assess It
- Give students three words from a recent text. Ask them to define each in context and use two accurately in original sentences.

Give pairs word, definition, example, and subject cards to match, then have them explain each completed set.
Ask students to discuss how the word "volume" changes meaning in music, mathematics, and everyday conversation.
