What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn unfamiliar academic and subject-specific words while reading grade-level texts. They explain meanings and use the words accurately in discussion and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students determine meanings from context, word parts, and reference tools. They use academic and subject-specific terms accurately when explaining ideas, supporting claims, and discussing texts.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat near-synonyms as interchangeable or rely on a word part while ignoring context. They may recognize a term when reading but misuse its form, tone, or meaning in writing.

How to Assess It

Give students three terms from the day’s text. Ask them to define each in context and use two accurately in a short explanation of the text’s main idea.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards from a class text; students sort them by meaning, subject area, and usage, then justify two placements.

  2. Prompt students to explain how one academic term sharpens the author’s claim, then write a two-sentence response using that term.

  3. Play vocabulary Taboo with assigned terms, requiring students to explain each word without using its definition, root, or listed synonyms.

  4. Students annotate a workplace memo or news article, then rewrite one paragraph using three precise terms from the current unit.
