What Students Need to Do
- Students learn unfamiliar academic and subject-specific words while reading grade-level texts. They explain meanings and use the words accurately in discussion and writing.

- Students determine meanings from context, word parts, and reference tools. They use academic and subject-specific terms accurately when explaining ideas, supporting claims, and discussing texts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat near-synonyms as interchangeable or rely on a word part while ignoring context. They may recognize a term when reading but misuse its form, tone, or meaning in writing.
How to Assess It
- Give students three terms from the day’s text. Ask them to define each in context and use two accurately in a short explanation of the text’s main idea.
