What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn the meanings and uses of academic words and terms tied to a subject. They use those words accurately when discussing and writing about grade-level texts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain new words in their own words and distinguish them from close synonyms. They use academic and topic-specific terms accurately in text-based discussion and writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may replace a familiar word with a harder synonym without checking meaning, tone, or grammar. They may copy definitions but struggle to explain or use the words independently.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket with one academic word and one topic-specific word from the day’s text. Students define each in their own words and use each in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups word, definition, example, and nonexample cards to match, then have them explain each completed set.

  2. Ask students to explain how three target words sharpen the author’s meaning, then use those words in a short response.

  3. Play vocabulary taboo, where students describe a target word without using listed clues while teammates identify it.

  4. Have students annotate a news article for academic and field-specific terms, then rewrite one paragraph for a younger audience.
