What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine the meanings of academic and subject-specific words in grade-level texts. They use those words accurately in discussion and writing about what they read.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain target words using context and confirm meanings with a reliable source. They use the words accurately when speaking and writing about the text or topic.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy a dictionary definition without understanding how the word works in the text. They may also use a target word in a sentence that is grammatical but shows the wrong meaning or tone.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Define one target word from today’s reading in your own words, then use it in a sentence that clearly shows its meaning.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards and meaning cards to match, then have them cite a sentence from the text that supports each match.
Ask students to explain how one target word sharpens the author’s claim, using a quoted phrase as evidence.
Play vocabulary Taboo, requiring students to describe each target word without using its definition or listed related words.
Have students find target words in a news article and explain how each word helps readers understand the issue.
