What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn general academic words and terms used in subjects such as science, history, and mathematics. They determine meanings and use the words accurately in discussion and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain grade-level academic and subject terms using context and discussion. They use the words accurately when speaking and writing about a text or topic.

Common Misconceptions

Students may repeat a definition without understanding how the word works in a sentence. They may also confuse related terms or use academic words in the wrong context.

How to Assess It

Give students three vocabulary words from a recent text. Ask them to define each in their own words and use one accurately in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs match vocabulary cards to definitions, examples, and images, then explain each match aloud.

  2. Ask students to explain how one academic word improves a sentence about the class text.

  3. Play vocabulary charades, requiring the guessing team to use each correct word in a complete sentence.

  4. Collect words from a news article, then write a short summary using three terms accurately.
