What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine the meanings of unfamiliar academic and subject-specific words in challenging texts. They discuss and write about those texts using the new terms accurately and precisely.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students infer precise meanings from context and confirm them with a reference source when needed. They use academic and subject-specific terms accurately in discussion and writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy a dictionary meaning that does not fit the passage. They may confuse academic words with technical terms or use new words in grammatically incorrect ways.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short unfamiliar passage with two bolded words, then ask them to explain each meaning and use each word in a new sentence.
