What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn the meanings of academic words and subject-specific terms from grade-level texts, read-alouds, and class discussions. They explain and use those words when speaking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain selected words in their own words and connect them to the text or topic. They use academic and content words accurately in discussion and writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may recognize a word but cannot explain or use it. They may copy dictionary definitions, ignore context, or confuse academic words with subject-specific terms.

How to Assess It

Use today’s grade-level text and ask: “Choose one academic word and one content term. Explain each in your own words and use each in a new sentence.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards and context-sentence cards from a grade-level text, then have them match, justify, and revise each meaning.

  2. Ask, “How does the word contrast help explain the author’s point?” Students discuss, then write two sentences using contrast accurately.

  3. Play Vocabulary Taboo with current academic and content words, requiring clues, examples, and correct use without saying the target word.

  4. Have students collect five specialized words from menus, weather reports, or sports articles and explain each word’s meaning and source.
