What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students learn useful words while hearing, reading, and talking about grade-level topics. They explain word meanings and use those words when discussing or writing about the topic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain academic and subject words using context, examples, and prior knowledge. They use the words correctly when speaking and writing about a grade-level topic.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may focus only on unfamiliar subject words and overlook academic words such as compare, explain, and evidence. They may guess from one clue without checking the sentence or discussion. Some can repeat a definition but cannot use the word correctly.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph about erosion with cause and sediment bolded. Ask them to explain each word and use it in a new sentence.

Read a paragraph about animal adaptations, then discuss: How do the words survive and camouflage help explain the topic?
Play Vocabulary Relay: teams match target words to meanings, examples, and sentences, then read each completed set aloud.
Study a school lunch menu and nutrition label, then use serving, ingredient, compare, and amount to explain one food choice.
