What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn general academic words and subject-specific terms from texts they hear and read. They discuss meanings and use the words when speaking and writing about a topic.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain unfamiliar words using context, word parts, discussion, or reference tools. They use new academic and subject words accurately when speaking and writing about a text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy a glossary definition without showing how the word works in the text. They may confuse general academic words, such as compare, with subject terms, such as erosion.

How to Assess It

Give students a four-sentence passage with two bold words. Ask them to explain each word from context and use it in a sentence about the passage.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards from a science article to sort into academic words, science terms, and unfamiliar words, then justify each choice.

  2. Read a short history passage, then ask: Which three words help explain the topic, and how does each word add meaning?

  3. Play vocabulary clues: one student describes a target word without saying it, while teammates identify the word and use it in context.

  4. Examine a weather forecast and list terms meteorologists use, then write a short forecast using at least four of those terms.
