What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find patterns, predict what will happen, and explain simple causes and effects. They compare size and amount, describe matter and energy, and show how parts work together. They also explain how shape, conditions, or actions affect function and change.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a familiar object or event, a student can name a pattern, compare quantities, and predict a result with a reason. The student can identify parts of a system and explain how one part or condition affects the whole.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call any group a pattern or assume that one event caused another just because it happened first. They may think bigger always means more, or that removing one part will not affect a system. They may also confuse matter with energy.

How to Assess It

Show a flashlight with one battery removed. Ask students to name two parts, identify the energy produced, and explain why the flashlight changed.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs ramps, toy cars, and blocks to test how ramp height changes distance, then record the pattern with drawings.

  2. Ask students to draw a plant in sun and shade, then explain how light could cause the plant to change.

  3. Play System Match by having students pair picture cards showing an object, one of its parts, and that part’s job.

  4. Walk through the classroom to find objects whose shapes fit their jobs, such as chair legs, scissors, hooks, and wheels.
