What Students Need to Do: Students compare two or more objects and tell which is larger, smaller, or about the same size. They compare groups and tell which has more, fewer, or the same number.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given objects or pictures, a student names what is being compared and makes an accurate comparison. The student uses complete statements and checks quantities by matching or counting.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call an object big without saying what it is compared with. They may think larger objects always come in larger groups, or judge quantity by how spread out a group looks. Some reverse more and fewer when stating a comparison.
How to Assess It: Show two toy boxes and two groups of balls. Ask students to circle the larger box, mark the group with fewer balls, and explain each choice.

Lesson moves

Give pairs of containers and counters; students compare container size, then build and label groups with more, fewer, or equal counters.
Line up a paper clip, crayon, and ruler; students discuss, then write two sentences using larger than and smaller than.
Play Comparison Flip: partners turn over two picture cards or dot cards and earn a point for stating an accurate comparison.
During classroom cleanup, students identify the larger supply bin and decide which bin holds fewer items before putting materials away.
