What Students Need to Do: Students compare two or more objects using words such as bigger, smaller, taller, shorter, more, fewer, and the same. They explain that a comparison depends on what is being compared.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly order objects by size and groups by number. They use comparison words in a complete statement, such as, “The cup is taller than the block.”
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the object that takes up more space always belongs to the group with more items. They may also use big and small without naming the object used for comparison.
How to Assess It: Show three pencils of different lengths and two groups of counters. Ask students to order the pencils, identify which group has fewer counters, and explain each choice.

Lesson moves

Give pairs three classroom objects to arrange from smallest to largest, then have them describe the order aloud.
Ask, “Can one object be both bigger and smaller?” Students draw an example and explain their thinking.
Play Compare and Cover with picture cards, where students cover the larger object or the group with fewer items.
Compare snack containers and cracker groups, then ask which container is taller and which group has more crackers.
