What Students Need to Do: Students measure or count parts of a system, then use numbers and units to make comparisons. They read and create scaled models that keep sizes or amounts in the same relationship.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can read a model’s scale, find represented dimensions, and label quantities with units. The student compares systems using evidence such as size, number, distance, or relative amount.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a larger drawing always represents a larger real object, even when scales differ. They may compare numbers without matching units or assume models show exact sizes and spacing.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: A pond model uses 1 cm = 2 m and is 7 cm long. Compare its actual length with a 10 cm model using 1 cm = 1 m.

Lesson moves

Measure four classroom objects, then build paper rectangles at 1 cm for every 10 cm and label actual and model lengths.
Display two animal enclosure maps with different scales and ask, “Which gives the animal more space, and what numbers prove it?”
Play a matching game pairing system cards with scaled diagrams, actual dimensions, component counts, and correct units.
Use a local watershed map scale to estimate stream length and compare the sizes of two drainage areas.
