What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose measurements or counts that make two systems easier to compare. They use a consistent scale in a drawing or model, label units, and explain what the quantities show.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can select a workable scale, apply it consistently, and label both model and actual measurements. The student uses exact numbers to explain how the systems are alike or different.

Common Misconceptions

Students may make every object the same size or change the scale midway through a model. They may treat model measurements as actual measurements. They also mix units or say “bigger” without using numbers.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A terrarium contains 24 plants, and a garden contains 96 plants. Draw bars using 1 centimeter for 12 plants, then compare them.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build two habitat models on grid paper with counters, using one square per square meter, then compare area, shelter, and organism counts.

  2. Show two differently scaled maps and ask, “Which comparisons are fair, and what labels or calculations support your answer?”

  3. Play Scale Match by pairing system cards, actual measurements, and model measurements that follow the same stated scale.

  4. Use grocery package labels to compare serving size, total quantity, and ingredient proportions in two drink mixes.
