What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare versions of a system that differ in size, amount, or part-to-part ratio. They use measurements or observations to explain how the change affects shape, strength, speed, capacity, or another result.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify what changed and describe the effect using data. They can predict how another change would affect the system and support the prediction with a clear pattern.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think larger systems always work better or hold more. They may assume doubling every length only doubles the material needed. They may also expect a small model and a full-size system to perform the same way.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show bridge spans of 10, 20, and 30 centimeters holding 40, 22, and 12 washers. Ask students to describe the pattern and explain how span affects performance.

Build index-card bridges with supports 10, 20, and 30 centimeters apart, then graph the number of washers each bridge holds.
Discuss: Why might a model skyscraper stay upright while a full-size copy of the same shape needs extra supports?
