What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a part or feature of an object, living thing, or simple system. They explain how its shape, material, or arrangement helps the whole do a job.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a picture or real item, a student can name a feature and connect it to a specific job. The student can explain, for example, that a bird’s wide wings help it fly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often name a part but only describe what it looks like, not how it helps. They may say roots eat soil instead of explaining that roots take in water and hold the plant in place.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a rain boot and a bird. Prompt: “Choose one, circle a feature, then complete: The ___ is ___, which helps ___.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a spoon, cup, and clothespin; students point to one part and explain how its shape helps the object work.
Ask, “How do a duck’s webbed feet help it move?” Students draw the feet and write one sentence explaining the connection.
Play a card match with pictures of parts and jobs, such as wheel and rolling, then have students justify each pair.
Inspect a classroom fan; students explain how the blades, guard, switch, and cord work together to move air safely.
