What Students Need to Do: Students identify the parts of an object, organism, or system and describe each part’s job. They explain how a part’s shape, material, or arrangement helps it do that job.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can examine an unfamiliar example, such as a bird beak or hand tool, and connect a visible feature to its job. The student supports the explanation with specific evidence from the example.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name a part and its job without explaining how the feature helps. They may also assume similar-looking parts always have the same job, or that one part works alone.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a cactus stem and ask: “How do two visible features help the cactus survive?” Require one evidence-based explanation for each feature.

Lesson moves

Give groups spoons, forks, tongs, and strainers, then have students test which tool best moves different materials and explain why.
Show two bird beaks and ask students to write which food each beak could gather best, using shape as evidence.
Play a matching game with cards showing body parts, machine parts, and jobs, then require students to explain each match.
Examine bicycle photos and trace how the pedals, chain, gears, and wheels work together to move the rider.
