What Students Need to Do: Students identify a part or feature of an object, organism, or simple system. They explain how its shape, material, or position helps it do a job.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can point to a feature and name its job. The student can give a simple reason, such as, “A duck’s webbed feet help it swim.”
Common Misconceptions: Students may name a part without explaining its job. They may focus on color or size even when that feature does not help with the stated function.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a bird’s beak and ask, “What job does this part do, and how does its shape help?” Accept a drawing or oral answer.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a spoon, fork, cup, and funnel, then have them test how each shape helps move water or dry rice.
Show a turtle shell and ask students to complete, “The shell helps the turtle because...” in speech or writing.
Play a matching game with picture cards showing animal parts, object parts, and jobs, such as wings, wheels, flying, and rolling.
Examine classroom scissors and discuss how the handles, hinge, and blades work together to cut paper.
