What Students Need to Do: Students identify parts, shapes, materials, or arrangements in an object, organism, or system. They explain how each feature helps it perform a specific job.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students make a clear claim linking a feature to its job and support it with observable evidence. They can predict how changing or removing a part would affect performance.
Common Misconceptions: Students often name a part and its job without explaining the connection. They may assume similar-looking parts always serve the same purpose or that changing one part will not affect the whole system.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a duck's webbed foot and a chicken's foot. Ask students to explain how each foot's shape supports what the bird does.

Lesson moves

Give groups tongs, spoons, strainers, and cups to test, then explain how each tool's shape and material help it work.
Ask students to write: How do a cactus's thick stem and spines help it survive in a dry place?
Play a matching game with cards showing structures, functions, and examples, then require students to defend each completed set.
Examine a bicycle brake system and explain how the lever, cable, and pads work together to stop the wheel.
