What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find parts of an event or set of observations that repeat or change in a predictable way. They use the pattern to describe what is happening, predict a result, or choose a workable design.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can point to observations, say what repeats or changes, and tell how the pattern describes an event. The student can use that pattern to predict what comes next or choose a design that should work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any two similar things a pattern, even when nothing repeats or changes predictably. They may describe what they see but not use it to make a prediction. Some assume patterns only use colors or shapes, so they miss patterns in motion, weather, or test results.
How to Assess It
- Give students a chart showing ramp heights of one, two, and three blocks with car distances of two, four, and six floor tiles. Ask, “What pattern do you see, and which ramp would help the car travel farthest?”

Ways to Teach It
Roll a toy car down ramps one, two, and three blocks high, measure with floor tiles, then choose a ramp for farther travel.
Show four daily sky photos and ask, “What repeats or changes? What do you think will happen next, and why?”
Play Pattern Detective: pairs study picture sequences, name what repeats or changes, then select the missing card.
Review photos of classroom litter after cleanup, find where scraps repeatedly collect, and choose a better location for the trash can.
