What Students Need to Do: Students find features or changes that repeat in observations, pictures, data, or objects. They use the pattern to describe what happens, make a prediction, or plan a solution.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students point to specific evidence, such as repeated shapes, movements, or changes over time. They explain how the pattern supports a description, prediction, or design choice.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call any similarity a pattern or assume two examples prove a pattern. They may notice a pattern but make a prediction that does not follow it.
How to Assess It: Show four pictures of a growing plant bending toward a window. Ask, “What pattern do you notice, and where will the plant likely grow next?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs flashlights, toy figures, and rulers to test how shadow size changes as the flashlight moves closer.
Show a week of weather symbols and ask, “What pattern do you see, and what might happen next?”
Play Pattern Detective by having students sort picture cards into repeating, growing, and no-pattern groups, then explain one choice.
Have students observe where puddles remain after recess, then choose the best place for a bench that should stay dry.
