What Students Need to Do: Students examine observations, measurements, or test results and find a trend that appears more than once. They use that trend to explain an event, make a prediction, or improve a design.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students clearly describe how two factors change together and cite at least two pieces of evidence. They use the pattern to make a reasonable prediction or choose a design change and explain why it should work.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call any repeated shape a scientific pattern or claim a pattern from one example. They may assume two events have a cause-and-effect relationship just because they occur together. Some students make predictions that do not match the data.
How to Assess It: Give students this data: paper helicopter wing lengths of 4, 6, and 8 cm produced fall times of 1.2, 1.7, and 2.1 seconds. Ask them to describe the pattern and choose a wing length for the slowest fall.

Lesson moves

Build three paper helicopters with different wing lengths, time each fall three times, then use the results to revise one design.
Show a week of temperature data and ask, "What pattern do you notice, and what might explain it?"
Play Pattern Detective by having pairs match data cards with explanation or prediction cards, then defend each match.
Chart cafeteria trash for five days, identify when waste is highest, and propose a bin or reminder placement based on the pattern.
