What Students Need to Do: Students examine observations, measurements, graphs, or models to find repeated relationships and trends. They use the trend to explain events, make predictions, or improve a solution.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given unfamiliar data, students describe a pattern and support it with specific evidence. They use that pattern to make a reasonable prediction or choose a design change.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call any similarity a pattern or focus on one data point instead of the full set. They may assume a pattern proves cause and effect, or ignore evidence that does not fit.
How to Assess It: Give students melting data for ice wrapped in three materials. Ask them to identify the pattern and choose a material for a cold pack sleeve, citing one result.

Lesson moves

Roll toy cars down ramps at three heights, graph the travel distances, and use the pattern to predict a fourth result.
Compare two graphs and write: What repeats, how are the events connected, and what evidence supports your claim?
Play a card match using data tables, graphs, pattern statements, and predictions that students must group and defend.
Use local hourly temperature data to choose the best time for outdoor practice and explain the choice from the pattern.
