What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students spot repeated relationships in data, models, and observations. They use those relationships to explain new events, connect examples across science, or propose a workable solution.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students describe a pattern and cite specific evidence that supports it. They use the pattern to make a reasonable prediction or solution and explain any limits.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call any repeated feature a pattern or assume a pattern proves cause and effect. They may ignore exceptions or extend a pattern beyond the available evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students the sequence 3, 6, 12, 24 bacteria over four hours. Ask them to describe the pattern, predict hour five, and justify their answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Measure a pendulum’s swings at four string lengths, record results, and use the pattern to predict an untested length.

  2. Show two weather graphs and ask, “What pattern appears in both, and how does it help explain the weather?”

  3. Play Pattern Match by pairing data cards with matching claims, then require students to defend each match with evidence.

  4. Graph the school’s hourly electricity use, identify peak times, and propose one schedule change that could reduce demand.
