What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find repeated trends in data, models, or observations. They use those trends to explain events, make predictions, connect examples, or improve a proposed solution.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students describe a pattern and support it with specific evidence. They use the pattern to make a reasonable prediction or explain how two scientific situations are related.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any similarity a pattern without showing repetition or evidence. They may assume a pattern proves cause and effect, or ignore data that do not fit the trend.
How to Assess It
- Give students a small table of daily temperature and insect activity. Ask them to state one pattern, cite two data points, and predict activity for the next day.

Ways to Teach It
Arrange pendulums with different string lengths, measure ten swings, and graph the results to find a pattern.
Show two graphs with similar trends and ask, "What repeats, and what claim can the pattern support?"
Play Pattern Detective by giving teams data cards to sort into repeating, increasing, decreasing, or no clear pattern.
Examine local rainfall and water-use records, then use the pattern to suggest a watering schedule for the school garden.
