What Students Need to Do: Students notice features or events that repeat. They explain what the pattern shows and use it to make or improve a simple solution.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can find a pattern in objects, pictures, weather, movement, or sound. They can describe the repeating part and use it to choose what comes next or guide a design.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call any group of similar objects a pattern, even when nothing repeats. They may look only at color and miss patterns in shape, size, sound, movement, or events.
How to Assess It: Show three picture pairs where dark clouds are followed by rain. Ask, "What pattern do you notice, and what could you carry when dark clouds appear?"

Lesson moves

Give students buttons in two colors, and have them build, name, and extend a repeating pattern.
Show a week of weather pictures and ask, "What happened more than once, and how do you know?"
Play Pattern Detective by clapping and stomping a sequence that students copy, describe, and extend.
Inspect shoe treads, then press patterned and smooth blocks into clay to compare which design grips better.
