What Students Need to Do: Students compare an object, living thing, or simple system under two different conditions. They use observations to explain what changed, what stayed the same, and what likely caused the result.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can observe ice in warm and cool places, record the results, and connect melting to warmth. The student can explain why an item stayed the same when its conditions did not change.
Common Misconceptions: Students may describe a change without naming what caused it. They may think time causes every change or that living things choose how they change. They may also assume that no visible change means conditions had no effect.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of one watered plant and one dry plant. Ask, “What condition was different, what changed, and why?”

Lesson moves

Place two ice cubes, one near a sunny window and one in shade, then record which changes faster and why.
Show a wilted and healthy plant, then ask students to write which condition may have caused the difference.
Play Cause Match with picture cards, pairing conditions such as heat or water with likely changes or no change.
Compare a wet playground photo with a dry one, and discuss how rain changes surfaces, puddles, and outdoor routines.
