What Students Need to Do: Students observe an object, living thing, or simple setup before and after one condition changes. They tell what changed, what stayed the same, and what caused the result.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can explain that ice melted because it was warm, while its color stayed the same. The student can predict what may happen when a plant gets water or does not.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name the result instead of the cause, saying “it melted” when asked what made it change. They may report only changes and overlook features that stayed the same.
How to Assess It: Show students a whole cracker and then press it into pieces. Ask, “What made the cracker change, and what about it stayed the same?”

Lesson moves

Place ice cubes in a sunny spot and a shaded spot, then have students record what changed and what stayed the same.
Show two plant photos, one watered and one dry, and ask, “What condition might explain the difference?”
Play a matching game with condition cards, such as push or heat, and result cards, such as rolling or melting.
Walk around the playground after rain and identify what water changed and what remained the same.
