What Students Need to Do: Students identify a condition that acts on an object, organism, or system. They explain what stays steady, what changes, and how the condition caused that result.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name the factor, describe the result, and support the link with observations or data. They can predict what may happen if the factor changes.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name the result as the cause, such as saying a plant wilted because it is wilted. They may also assume every factor causes change or that stable means nothing is happening.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Two identical plants receive different amounts of water. What factor differs, and how might it affect each plant over one week?”

Lesson moves

Build index-card towers, test them at different fan distances, and record how wind strength affects stability.
Write about a pond during a drought, naming one condition and explaining two changes it could cause.
Match factor cards to outcome cards, then earn a point by explaining each cause and effect link.
Compare photos of a road before and after a freeze, then explain how temperature and water caused the change.
