What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify a factor that affects an object, organism, or system. They compare evidence before and after the factor changes, then explain the cause-and-effect relationship.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can name the changing condition, describe its effect, and support the explanation with evidence. They can also predict what may happen if that condition increases, decreases, or stays constant.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat two events happening together as proof that one caused the other. They may think stability means no movement or change, or assume that one factor always produces the same result.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A pond receives half its usual rainfall for six weeks. Predict one change in the pond system, name the affected part, and explain the cause-and-effect link.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build two index-card towers, change only the base width, test each with a fan, and record which condition improves stability.

  2. Write a claim explaining how a week of high temperatures could change a classroom terrarium, using two observations as evidence.

  3. Play Factor, Effect, Evidence by matching scenario cards with likely system changes and evidence that would support each match.

  4. Examine local drought data and predict how watering limits could affect lawns, reservoirs, and city water use.
