What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a condition that changes and track what happens afterward. They use observations or data to explain whether an object, organism, or system remains balanced or shifts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a scenario or data set, students name the changed factor, compare conditions before and after, and explain the cause-and-effect link. They support the explanation with specific evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think any change makes a system unstable, or that stable means nothing changes. They may confuse two events occurring together with one event causing the other.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “An aquarium warms from 22°C to 30°C, dissolved oxygen drops, and fish begin surface breathing. Explain how temperature affected the system.”
