What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify a condition that can keep something steady or cause it to change. They use observations or data to explain the effect and predict what may happen next.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students compare conditions, identify the factor that changed, and describe the resulting pattern. They support a prediction with specific evidence and explain whether the effect increases, decreases, or maintains stability.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think stable means completely motionless or unchanged. They may name two events as cause and effect without evidence, or overlook factors that were not controlled.

How to Assess It

Give students data showing plant growth under three light levels. Ask, “How did light level affect the plants, and what evidence supports your answer?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build index-card towers with wide and narrow bases, then test each with equal fan force and record when it falls.

  2. Write a claim explaining how one changed condition could affect stability in a pond, bridge, or animal population.

  3. Sort factor-and-effect cards, then match each factor to a likely system change and defend the match to a partner.

  4. Examine a local drought report and explain how reduced rainfall could affect water supply, soil, plants, and animal populations.
