What Students Need to Do: Students identify a condition that changes and trace what happens next. They use observations or data to explain why an object, organism, or system stays steady or changes.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can compare two conditions, identify what was changed, and describe the resulting pattern. The student supports a claim with observations or measurements and makes a reasonable prediction.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume that two events happening together means one caused the other. They may think stability means nothing moves or changes. They may also expect one condition to affect every object or organism in the same way.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Two identical bean plants get equal water. One receives eight hours of light and grows 4 cm, while the other receives two hours and grows 1 cm. Ask students to identify the changed condition, explain its effect, and predict what might happen with no light.

Lesson moves

Build paper towers, test them at three fan speeds, and record when each tower stays upright or falls.
Write: How could a week without rain change a pond, and which parts might remain stable?
Play Cause Chain cards by matching conditions, such as heat or added weight, to likely changes and defending each match.
Compare classroom temperatures before and after opening a door, then explain how the condition affects the room system.
