What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe what happens after a specific action or change. They use those observations to predict what may happen when the action is repeated.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly names what caused an observed change and what happened as a result. The student makes a reasonable prediction and supports it with an observation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the cause and the result. They may assume that events happening together caused each other. They may make guesses without using observations as evidence.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of an ice cube on a sunny sidewalk. Ask students to draw what will happen next and explain what causes the change.

Ways to Teach It
Roll toy cars down low and high ramps, compare distances, then predict what will happen on a steeper ramp.
Ask students to complete this prompt: When I push a ball harder, I think it will ___ because ___.
Play a card-matching game where students pair action cards, such as watering a plant, with likely result cards.
Observe a wet paper towel near a sunny window and connect the drying to wet sidewalks after rain.
